Benchmarking is Essential to Improve Performance
Commercial Strategy is launching a 2007 in-person benchmarking study focused on “Successful IP Monetization” to identify, document, evaluate and confirm “best practices,” ”best business models” and “best deal structures” in Intellectual Asset Management and IP commercialization.
Following the completion of the study Commercial Strategy will hold face to face report out sessions to deliver unique results and give contributors access to industry "best processes".
Companies such as P&G, GE, Dow, DuPont, 3M, Kodak, NEC, Microsoft, United Technologies, Intel, HP, Sony and many others, are successfully commercializing their intellectual property, know how and technologies (“IP”) and are creatively supporting their business units and generating significant high-margin revenue and other measurable value from their IP commercialization efforts.
Benchmarking teaches what works and what does not work in IAM program development and helps organizations progress economically through the four stages of IAM development: Early Stage, Heroic, Team and Strategic.
Benchmarking is a key component in successfully managing performance and is a tested and proven method for setting business goals to drive meaningful results in technology transfer, IP commercialization and intellectual asset management.
Converting the benchmarking and assessment data into a roadmap for improvement using the learnings and metrics of proven models is a key step in developing your IAM program.

The Benchmarking Study will include successful IP investment strategy, business models, organizational structures, management reporting tools, financial measures, internal and external business development, market intelligence, transaction models, criteria development, decision – making tools, pipeline management, opportunity analyses and valuation processes.
The Benchmarking Study will provide you with the tools to assess your intellectual asset management (“IAM”) performance, prioritize improvement initiatives, identify performance gaps and target opportunities for the greatest improvement. Specifically, the Study will give you the means to:
• Measure your performance against “best-in-class” companies to gain insight into successful models and processes and opportunities for improvement
• Compare your performance to your competition to identify areas of competitive advantage and risk
• Understand how your business model, strategy and practices impact your ability to commercialize IP as a repeatable business process
• Make “fact-based” decisions that reduce costs and increase ROI
• Use proven metrics and frameworks to improve year-over-year performance
• Prioritize and value improvement initiatives in your IAM program
• Determine the highest and best use of your IP (for the highest ROI)
• Understand the competitive implications of sustaining current performance levels
Benchmarking informs us of what is possible by examining the stunning returns achieved by successful organizations and what is at risk by examining the unsustainable costs of doing the wrong things, in the wrong way for the wrong reasons. |
